One feather at a time...

This summer we visited the Reifel Bird Sanctuary near Vancouver and had the opportunity to observe Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) from very close in their habitat. This one is carefully and deliberately preening its feathers, one at the time. Beautiful, graceful birds. No feeding, no calling. No sudden movement either.

Canon 7D, Sigma 150 mm macro 2.8 + 1.4 TC, f/5.0, ISO 400, 1/2500 sec, monopod, PP in LR5, CS-CC and NIK. Small slice cropped off the right for composition.
