Otter on Golden Pond

Shasta County, Ca
This otter was something of an exposure challenge. The image was taken shortly after sunrise with the pond bathed in golden light, but the otter in the shade. 40D, 700mm, F8, 1/100, -1EC, tripod. A positive EC might have been better choice, but yielded very low shutter speed. Thanks for any suggestions.

Nice capture. I don't think in this scene that shutter speed is an issue. Looks pretty calm. Tough animal to get. I see lots (relatively) of them but never when I have a camera or where a camera would even be useful. Love the color palette here, a good BG & FG as well as the old stump. Nice pose from the otter and you got good detail in the fur and face. I might try to lighten the body or even the scene just a little bit so that detail is easier to see. The large image shows lots more than the small and is a joy to look at. Is that some sort of food it captured on the stump and held by its paws?

Not sure what you mean by "EC" but this is a fine image of a river otter. Well done, good detail in the otters coat and face. Great light.
Thanks for sharing.

As a fellow Canon user I understood EC perfectly. And I agree that this is fine image. Seeing this image and comparing it to your mating deer one, I can believe that you get some strong golden sunrise light where you are.

David, this is a nice photo. The bronze color of the water and the concentric rings that surround the main subject draw my eyes in.

Perhaps what appears to be fishing line hanging from the left side of the tree could be edited out. Also there are a few spots in the otter's shadow on the water that might be removed.

Stunning otter image David. It is the awesome golden rippled water that makes this so attractive. Your exposure is spot on. :toast:

Peter he had scavenger a large bluegill. I had not previously seen them eat anything but live prey. I have subsequently observed them feeding on fresh salmon carcasses. Dave

I really like the complementary golden tones in the water. Overall it looks quite nice and I think you did well with the exposure. As noted, this shutter speed seems to be adequate. Not knowing your ISO, I'm not sure how much leeway you had to bump things up a bit to squeeze more shutter speed.

The lovely colour of the water stands out from the thumbnail but it is only viewing the larger version that you get the real beauty of this image. Exposure of the otter is spot on and it is nice and sharp too, with the adjacent tree being nicely softened.
Great alert pose and eye contact. :toast:
