This pair of Clouded Skippers was a bit of challenge.
It was bright mid-day light, and the pair sat on a bright piece of old sun bleached wood plank.
I used flash to fill the near side, and set the exposure at minus one stop.
F/18, 1/320, ISO 640, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 with a Sigma ring-flash. Monopod for support in a kneeling position. Near full frame.
I sometimes steal old song titles. The song's by 'Cream'

Well done, Howard. Very nice result under very difficult conditions. These are handsome little skippers.

I'm pretty sure these are clouded skippers, Lerema accius. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/5648 for more images of this species.

I just double checked & you're probably right Peter.
They both are very similar with the same small white spots at the wings edge..
Thanx man :wavey:

Skippers are a bitch to ID for me, Howard. One pretty consistent difference between the duskywings and the smaller grass skippers is that duskywings usually perch with their wings held out horizontally to the sides, while grass skippers often fold their wings over their back like this. I don't think I've ever seen Erynnis skippers folding their wings over their back, though they probably do at times.

Great dof here Howard, and the fill is done perfectly. It, however, doesn't look like "it's gettin near dawn..." You're right about skipper ID being tough.

Nice work, Howard, I like the complete subject focus obtained by stopping down. As for the title (and song), another thumbs up. Way better than "Afternoon Delight." :toast:
