Baby harp seal on the ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Here I was trying to give the viewer of sense of where the seals give birth.
Canon Eos3, EF70-200mm F2.8L @ 70mm , handheld while lying on belly.

Hi Dale,
sweet photo. I like the subtle contrast between the "warm" tone of white of the seal and the cool white of the snow.
The only improvement, IMHO, would be a bit more light in the right eye...maybe with a little of flash you might have had a catchlight into both eyes, it would have been perfect!

Robert, great shot. You definately succeeded in showing the environment without going to wide-angle. I can imagine this was a tough exposure - all that white and clear blue sky. I wouldn't sweat the flash stuff. I think too much emphasis gets placed on "fill-flash" and "catch lights" anyway. You're a nature photographer not a portrait photographer. If we wanted perfect catch-lights in every shot we would shoot captive animals in a studio.
Keep up the good work.

Fantastic photo Dale. Wonderful detail and exposure. Love the expression on the seal pups face, just get the feeling that it wants your help. Nice capture of a place and a feeling.

Great job on a tough exposure, Dale. And you sure accomplished the habitat goal. Did he know you were there?

Pete,
When you slide up to them on your belly they seem to accept you totally, must think your one of them just a bit funny looking.

What a cutie! I love it! Was momma around? If she was, how did she react to your presence?

How precious! Really nice composition and I know the exposure with all that white would have been a challenge and handheld on your belly on the ice - well it was worth it!
