Another Turkey
by Dennis Plank
Australian Brush Turkey. Fairly common in the tropical east and the books say it's quite tame in touristy areas. We saw quite a few, but they were all fairly skittish. This one was taken on our last outing of the trip at the Cairns Botanical Gardens (an excellent garden, particularly for a relatively small city). The weird tail is not askew, they actually are vertical and composed of two distinct layers that are a bit apart at the bottom and come together at the top like a narrow upside down V. These turkey sized birds can fly, but normally run.
7D, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held, f6.3, 1/1600, Av mode with +2/3 compensation, iso 1000 (I'd just come out of a rainforest walk and hadn't adjusted yet). Processed in CS6 and cropped to 13.3 MP. Taken November 4th at 9:16 am.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
