Peaceful Evening

This is a picture I made in early October while in Upper MI. Another couple that are good friends and photographers showed me this place. Although I had been close I had never been at this spot. It was a wonderfully peaceful and quiet evening that we all enjoyed so much. Along Lake Superior the autumn colors were just starting to turn. Thanks so much for all of your comments on my last post and any thoughts on this one. 5D3, 24-105L @65mm, ISO 160, f/11, 1/20 sec with cpl.

Love the rich color and soft light but its the comp that shines. The entire image flows from that old snag on the left edge in a way that just feels right. This oozes a sense of peace and quiet.

Great image, Nick. One of my favorites of your recent posts. Great comp with nice color and interest throughout. I wonder if the water gets any calmer at this location - it's already a very nice reflection but even glassier would be just sweet. Really nice. :toast:

Similar theme to the shot I just posted Nick! This nicely displays the peace and quiet you experienced that evening.

Thanks David, Jared and Joe!
Jared, Yes, It was even calmer for a bit but I didn't get a comp I liked as well as this one, but the reflections were beautiful.
Joe, Yes, it is quite similar and I enjoyed your shot very much! Nick

Very attractive and serene.
Glass would have really been sweet, perhaps a bit slower SS?
Comp is very nice.

I really like the composition with the reflection and lots of interesting elements. It seems just a tad dark on my monitor.

Real nice serene mood with the reflection and the beginnings of fall color, Nick. Sounds like you had a wonderful time with your friends. What a great way to end the day.

Very pretty and serene scene. I would not mind a CCW rotation about 0.5? Nice of your friends to show you this sweet spot and fine job capturing the scene.

The grayish midtones in the trees are nicely placed in this to help break up the greens and yellows. The mid line of the water horizon does give it a peaceful, balanced feel. One real bright red leaf near the water's edge that seems to pop out at me, so I might tone it down/clone it, but minor.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all of your comments and thoughts on this.
Harley, Yes, Very nice of them, and they showed me a couple of other places as well, including the trail where I shot the red maple leaf on the birch log.
Harry, Yes, I noticed that red leaf and it's reflection as well. I had planned to tone it down but then let it go. If I decided to print this I will surely tone it down a little or just clone it out since it is so small. Thanks, Nick

I like the left to right flow of the image and the squiggled reflections. In addition to the red leaf, the white spot on the rock in the center and its reflection might be cloned out. The sandy beach looks ready for a canoe to be pulled ashore. Looking again, the sandy beach on the far right appears a little bright in comparison to the other sections of sand. The non-50/50 split is nice also.

Hi Doug, Thanks! I see that white spot now too and didn't really notice it before. I agree it could also be cloned out while I'm at it. Now I also see one more white speck and reflection just below the main tree trunk to the right of the snag. The lighter sand on the right is just the way it looked I guess. Thanks for the kind words and as always appreciate your thoughts. Nick

I had the pleasure of working at a resort in Northern Wisconsin (near Hurley/Ironwood) during summers while in college (decades ago). I haven't been back since, but your images have made me add the area to my bucket list. You have a nice sense of subject matter, but your processing is what puts your images in the upper crust. I think the average guy with a camera would have over-exposed this shot, and printed it much lighter & flatter, creating a more boring result. I like the overall darkness in yours, with areas of interest emphasized by being a little brighter, This is how I would see & process the shot, which makes me appreciate your skills.

Thank you John, Preston, Michael and Stan! I appreciate your thoughts very much. Glad you guys liked it.
Michael, I go through Hurley, WI and Ironwood, MI quite often. I don't really feel like I'm "UP North" until I get to that area. Let me know if you ever get back up that way! Nick

This appears to be HDR?
Seldom does a pic divided in the middle present such a pleasing scene. Yours does.
I like the reflection, the contrast, the color [seems a bit overdone, however, on my non-calibrated monitor].
The strong whitish verticals and horizontals really grab the eye.

Larry, Thank you! No HDR here. I think out of all 499 images I have posted in almost 10 years only 2-3 have been a blend of exposures. The color is rich but it looks much like it did that evening to me. The soft light of that evening seemed to make the difference and all the colors had such a wonderful look and feel. I appreciate your thought and glad you enjoyed the shot. Nick
