Osprey drama! + Reposts

This osprey is named Fleck and is one of the incredible number of ospreys that inhabit Ft. Desoto Park in St. Petersburg, FL. He and his mate, Jewel, have had the same nest atop a man made osprey nesting platform in the corner of one of the parking lots in the park. I do my cycling workouts in this rather large park and was more than joyous to come upon fleck and his mate a few weeks ago. Of all my shots of him, this is my absolute favorite in that he is in-flight, has his talons displayed and is making direct eye contact with me. I posted a clear shot of him yesterday. Although the shot is certainly lacking technically, it is not lacking in the drama department!

Unfortunately, the lighting was terrible that particular morning and I was shooting him as he was perched on some power line wires in Av mode not ready for any action shots. Suddenly, I had a chance at this spectacular shot, but was not technically ready to capture it properly. The result is something that I personally find spectacular as to the subject, but less than desirable from a technical standpoint to the point that I would not print this shot. I have great hopes to get something like this, but in tack sharp focus sometime in the future.

My own criticism: Distracting background, poor contrast, not focused optimally, and I would have ideally liked to have captured all of his wings. But you know what, I love the shot! :)

Shot with a Canon 70D, with Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6L lens at 400mm.

BTW, I am not too deeply into post processing yet as a relative newbie at this just since the spring. I use iPhoto and PSE11, but got a bit worn out with the latter by the time I got to layers. Do you post processing experts see any hope to salvage this shot to make it good enough for printing? Thanks.

I understand why you love this one, Sandy, and your self critique is pretty much right on. As to the distracting bg, the only way to avoid that is patience and lots of attempts. Raptors (and most other birds) as well as human pilots will take off into the wind, particularly if it's fairly stiff. By looking at the wind and perch position, you can try stationing yourself where you'll have the best chance of avoiding that bg. Focus is tough on flight shots-particularly when they're coming at you and other people are much better at it than I, so I'll leave them to suggest techniques for that one.

Thanks Dennis! You know, as a retired airline pilot and a guy with 657 skydives, I should understand that concept about taking off into the wind, but I never realized that they did that! :)

Sandy: Your self critique is pretty accurate. You asked about post processing to salvage the shot…. Sorry to tell you, but no. Sometimes you get the shot, sometimes you don't. You'll have more opportunities, but I would not spend time working this image as the focus is not something that is ever going to be corrected in post processing.

Keith, thanks so much for the input. I was fantasizing that somehow I could turn this into a wall hanger, but alas, it looks like I will have to use your suggested technique - get it right at the time of the shot!

Just got back from a concert and a friend "played" with the shot and sent me this.
