Paper Wasp

I found this paper wasp building a nest on my front porch. I was not well equipped for macro photography using my Canon T3i and kit 18-55mm lens, and the shot was done hand held. All that being said, I was thrilled (as a newbie to the hobby) to have this photo published in the Tampa Bay Times last week! I guess their standards are less than optimal in that certainly the focus could have been sharper, but I do like the shot!

First of all, congrats on getting published in the newspaper:jump:
Always nice when one can get some recognition.
I remember when I first got published in a magazine, it was thrilling as a beginner!
Perhaps not tack sharp, but your wasp's interesting hanging on the nest like this, and it's a good side POV Sandy.
Welcome to NPN, glad to meet you :wavey:

Thanks Howard, it was sort of a thrill in that I have had my DSLR for only 5 months. Of course now that I have a nice macro lens, a Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro, no wasps show up! Pleased to meet you also!

Congrats on getting your image in the paper, Sandy. I can see why it was chosen - great view of the wasp, and a precise pof (point of focus) providing good detail in the head and torso against the neutral gray bg. Well captured.

Thanks so much Scott. I am fascinated by this type of photography, but I have to much to learn!

Hi Sandy,

Congratulation on the publication of your photo. While I agree that the focus is not optimal, it still is a nice image of an interesting subject.

Thanks Randy, I really hesitated sending it in because of the soft focus, yet I was totally fascinated with the shot. If you could see how tiny that nest is, I was just so happy to get what I got with my limited equipment and very limited experience - especially macro shooting. I just never anticipated getting even that good a focus hand holding the camera on such a challenging subject, and it was in a very dark corner of my porch.
