I really appreciated the opportunity to take some sunrise images this past weekend mainly because it was the first time in my 3 weeks here on the coast of Texas that there has been a sunrise ( visible, that is ). There are many docks here along the bay and I had to keep going from one to another hoping to find some birds in the FG water. Finally caught up to this cooperative great blue heron just before the colors started to fade.

I like your choice of composition here, and the panoramic format you chose. Nice processing to get the image straightened out. It almost looks like a mirrored image.
Now here's my critique - I'm not quite sure about all the murky blackness in the foreground. And I think the golds in the horizon area are also a little murky. Add the two together, and it seems the image is a little murky overall. I guess I'd try to put a little more "punch" or brightness in the horizon. But, as you stated, the colors were already fading. In which case this is probably a very accurate rendition of how the scene actually looked. As far as the heron goes - you seem to emphasize the importance of the bird in your post, but in all candor (and IMO), and especially in such dim lighting, the bird is just not that important at all. It is but one of many graphic, detailess, and almost unidentifiable structures randomly placed in the water area.

I think by bringing up the highlights it would help the color sing. Nice comp & scene.

The paired docks work really well here, Bob. I also really like the colors in the sky and water. The heron is an interesting addition, but really isn't playing much of a role in the overall image. I too would like a bit more detail in the darkest parts of the foreground.

Beautiful scene and comp Bob. I agree with the others about pulling up the high lights for more pop. Very nice.
