Great Egret Matador

At least that's what it looks like to me in this preening pose. Serendipity struck last Saturday when we had to turn back from the Ridgefield auto loop temporarily due to a fallen tree. When we were able to proceed, I had my closest opportunity ever with this species (it actually got too close for the big lens at one point). I do wish it had turned it's head enough for some eye contact during this procedure, but it didn't happen.

1Div, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, beanbag on truck window, f5.6, 1/1000, Av mode with -1/3 compensation, iso 640. Added a bit of warmth since this was taken under overcast winter skies. The Egret was still a fair distance away for this shot, so it's cropped to 10.5MP. Taken January 11th at 10:29 am.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

I really think this is an excellent image. No eye? Just a shy matador. I notice that photos from Ridgefield are usually taken with long lenses. Is it necessary to have at least 500mm to get acceptable photos? I have been by there or at least in the vicinity several times but have not visited.

Ole! Great pose and well exposed - nice. We could wish for eye contact, but the pose makes the shot.

Seen this pose many times - would be improved slightly if you could see the eye
