Another in a series I shot last year, of the Hissing Adder.
I was moving along our pond drain-off in search of frogs/toads, its favorite food.
AKA Puff Adder, Hissing Adder, Spreading Adder, Blow Viper, Hissing Sand Snake.
F/13, 1/200th, ISO 640, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x with a 580EX flash using a soft-top.

Neat catch, Howard, especially with the tongue out. It's great how the colors blend in so well. I'd have thought that the bees might be possible food for this snake. (Another name for them around here is the Hognose snake and they're famous for "playing dead" if you handle them...I've tried this once and it worked, but I didn't like the feeling of harassing a wild creature, so I quickly stopped.)

Great capture, Howard. I love the terrifically menacing expression. The bees are an interesting bonus I was not expecting when I clicked on the thumbnail. :toast:

Hum, hiss, buzz...there is a symphony hidden in this image. Love all the details and the unlikely pairing of ceatures.

Such a menacing looking critter, I'm surprised there are any frogs around. Nice catch, Howard.

I do not like snakes! However, this is a well-taken image and the bees are a surprising bonus. That snake sure looks threatening, with the facial expression and flicking tongue.
