Milford Cloudscape + uncropped version

Milford Sound

New Zealand's most iconic location has been my White Whale over the years. In fact I've found the great majority of photographs from here lacking in a coherent composition due to the often chaotic shoreline. I finally made some images on my latest trip which satisfied me; while this particular one is not my best, the shapes of the stumps appealed to me.

Beautiful scene Kah Kit. Love the light and shade and a gorgeous and probably rare cloudscape unsullied by continuous rain. It feels just a tiny bit weighty in terms of dark mass on the right I wonder if you crop another 5% off that side whether it will match the weighting of the left side a little better.

Beautiful, exotic landscape, Kah Kit! I like the composition and color and the way you have presented the dark tones. Sky and reflections are image makers. :toast: Chet

Beautiful scene Kah Kit and very nice balance of darks and lights. Wonderful reflection also. Great job on the processing. Very nice.

This is wonderful! I really like the light and beautiful color. The reflections are so nice and yes, very interesting shapes in the stumps. The larger version is a treat! Nice work Kah Kit! :toast:

I really like the shapes of the stumps and their reflections. They look like some kind of ancient weaponry. The low hanging cloud band is very nice and the large version is special. I agree with Ian about the right side feeling a little heavy. Maybe a crop or maybe just a shadow adjustment. Pretty sweet as is.

Thanks for the feedback. I did consider the left to right balance carefully and had wondered if people might find issue with the weighting. I'm not keen on taking off the sides as I think the symmetry between the bookending pieces of land is of greater importance. However perhaps the uncropped version with the foreground stump lightened strikes a better balance?

Your comp and the atmospherics make this epic. The only way this could really be enjoyed to the fullest would be standing in front of a 6' print. :toast:

A beautiful scene to be sure... makes me want to jump on a plane to NZ right now. I'm on the fence about the re-post. I almost like the original stump. Maybe bringing out more of the shadow details (slightly) on the right mountain may help the balance issue??? However, IMHO, I think when we emphasize the balance of light too much in a picture we sometimes sacrifice the mood that darker areas of contrast create. A fantastic picture with so much for my eyes to feast on! :toast:

I find this to be pure eye candy. Well processed, and an ideal composition, IMO.
Between the two you posted, I really like the first better, as the more panoramic view in the first post seems to possess much more perceived depth.

Beautiful! The stumps are neat additions and the framing with the ridges and their reflections works well. I prefer the original post.

Love the repost Kah Kit. I think inclusion of more sky and reflection work best for me. The original seemed too confined, closed in. I also think not cropping the side elements was a good choice.

The sky, water and far peaks are awesome as are the stumps.
I don't mind the dark shadow on the right side, but would prefer no shadow on the central peak.

Kah Kit, I like how the slopes on the left and right sides of the scenes reflect on the water to create a center channel that reflects the blue sky and clouds.

I think your original crop is the one to go with (with perhaps a smidgen more room at the bottom if possible). A little better balance IMO as the reflections of the rising mountains are echoed in symmetry on either side
