Falls of the Big Sioux
by Randy Runtsch
As we drove home from an early spring camping trip to Yellowstone and the Black Hills, my son and I decided to stop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to see the waterfalls of the Big Sioux River. The falls are situated in an urban park setting, surrounded by man-made structures. Dozens of people walked and stood on the rocks among the falls, so it was difficult to get a full view of the falls that excluded people and the surrounding man-made structures. This image captures a small fraction of the many falls.
The original image includes a father and son to the left, a small family to the right, and a bridge above the falls. But, since no humans, or human-made objects, are evident in this photo, it's probably okay to post it in the Landscape gallery, rather than in Man & Nature.

Location: Waterfalls of the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA
Date and Time: April 8, 2012, 15:38
Equipment: Pentax K110, DA 55-300mm, tripod
Exposure: 1/6s, f/22, iso 200
Crop: About 20% of the left, 10% of the top, and 10% of the right have been cropped to remove people and a bridge.
Post processing in Lightroom 5: Dodged dark areas of the rocks. Reduced noise because of extensive crops. [The Pentax K110D has a 6MP sensor, and has been replaced with a Pentax K-5 that sports a 16MP sensor.)

4 commentsNice shadow detail and well controlled highlights.
Like the squared comp and POV as well
Photos captured during the golden hours would be best. Lighting may be difficult at this site much of the year, since the Big Sioux River flows to the north, as I recall. I pass by Sioux Falls on the way west once every year or two, and should make it a point to visit the falls on an early summer morning.
