Two Relics

Small family farms and large American elm trees both seem to be relics of days gone by.

This old barn, next to a main road, is something of an Adirondack Icon. Many people have stopped over the years to photograph it as it decays. I wonder how many of them recognize that the old tree next to it (a rare survivor of the Dutch elm disease epidemic) is a species that once lined hundreds of "Elm Streets." Unless they remember the magnificent archways formed by those trees, and bought their food from family farmers like the one who built this barn, they won't have a clue.

Canon 24-105mm.

A beautiful image Wayne. It is a wonderful setting and easy to see why so many would stop and photograph it. You did an excellent job of capturing the wonderful mood of this place. We lost several elms to the Dutch Elm disease many years ago on our property and I remember them well. Nice work!!

Man, talk about an iconic NE scene. The old barn looks like it still has a few years to go as a standing structure. Pretty scene. Not many places one can go and get an elm tree in their photo. I had several on the place I bought in Maine in '71. Within 5 years they were all gone. Pity. It was hard to give the wood away for fire wood as it split really poorly. But the price was right. Thanks for the memories, Wayne.

Nice job, Wayne. This really has the feel of the Adirondacks, at least from what I assume it is like. The red vines on the tree are a nice feature, that go well with the old barn and the distant mountains.

This image really evokes a sensory feeling for me the viewer. I can smell the autumn air and feel the coolness on my skin. A simple scene beautifully captured.

Well, this ought to be a poster for the Adirondacks. We had the same thing kill the Dutch elms here in Denver in the 60's and 70's. We had several streets lined with them. Only the best neighborhoods, of course. Just another outstanding piece from you, Wayne! :toast:

What a perfect image, so evocative of a season and place. I love the two relics; the composition and colors are just superb. This belongs on a calendar!
