Blocking the Sun

Black smoke from torching Spruce trees obstructs the sun on a fire outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. Black Spruce trees carpet the Alaskan landscape, and with the flammable oils in their needles and tendency to grow very close together, the behavior of fire when it gets into them is the most intense and powerful i've seen anywhere.

Lovely….drool…. misty eyes…now mesmerized... Every good wildland ff’er can’t deny being touched by the pure beauty of the flames….that this captures so well. Excellent moment and exposure! That’s a pocket of power going up. Green ones burn better than the dead dry-needled ones.

Yeah Ken, it's really something seeing big pockets go up. One of the only disappointments with jumping is that the fires we end up on are usually small and not ripping, because if they were there's not much that 4 guys could do about it!
