Fly on fern

Last summer I spied this very small (about 1/4 inch) fly hanging on the tip of a fern frond. I don't know ID of the fly.

Canon 60D. 180mm macro lens. F/5 for 1/25 sec. ISO 500. Tripod mounted, natural lighting. Background is natural, I believe the lawn and/or other green plants.

Very nice composition. Good detail in the insect and, of course, the background is perfect. Like the framing as well. Good job. :toast:

Impressive size, Carolyn, and I like the unusual perspective. The fly stands out really well from the green bg.

Wonderful detail in this, Carolyn, and a great pose by the fly ! I did wonder about the bg - also wonder whether possibly a touch of gradient might be nice ? A very impressive capture whatever !!

What a stunning look at this fly. It's sharpness is great, but that glorious background really lets this sing.

Looks to be one of the Robber Fly family (Asilidae). Primary focus is excellent on the body. I'd like a little more DOF on the subject even at the cost of that near perfect BG. Will the 60D still behave noise wise at iso 800? With my 7D, the full stop iso are actually cleaner than the interims.
