WC622: Skiing with Dogs!

We have 20+ inches of snow on the ground here in New Jersey -- so we might as well have fun with it! This is our friend and neighbor John skiing... in our backyard! With the dogs! Kind of unbelievable. That's what makes this pic special for me.

Also - there are three generations of German Shepherds there! Marcus, who is 10 years old, is on the right. His daughter, Leila, 3 y.o. on the left. And Leila's puppy, 3-month-old Athena is bringing up the rear.

Nice look at some wintertime fun. The skier's pose add some nice drama. With 20 inches of snow, I'm surprised that the dogs are in up to their bellies, is there a hard crust? We only got 13 (measured as I shoveled the driveway on Thurs AM, but then it drizzled all day and dropped another 4 - 5 inches Thurs. night.

There is a nice hard crust, Mark. We are 1200 feet in elevation, so nothing from the past 4 storms has melted, it's just all accumulating. The dogs and I walk nicely over the top of the snow, but the guys on the property fall through every 4 or 5 steps... which is of course very annoying! We're making the most of it, though. The fireplace has been going a lot!

I agree, Rebecka. . .we can't do anything about the weather so we might as well make the best of it! We are enjoying some sunshine today but are anticipating more snow again overnight. We also have about 20+ inches on the ground now. I'm thinking of getting snowshoes to get around. This is a great photo to remember this unusual winter, plus being a fun shot of your dogs enjoying the snow. Good job on exposure of all that bright snow. Nice comp you captured of the skiier and the romping dogs.

Fun indeed! It's always great to be able to go right out the back door to have fun, instead of traveling to a ski area. It's great that you got a thick crust to make it easier, too. (In my yard, it's hard to get very far without snowshoes, and I think we would be doing a little "plowing" even on skis. Good for the dogs, too; it's always interesting to see a puppy's first reaction to deep snow. I have had some dogs that dive right into it and have a ball tunneling and jumping, while others want to tip-toe to stay above it, and just want to be rescued. Excellent job with exposure on the snow, keeping the high contrast of a sunny day while keeping details in the shadows.

We sent a big part of our normal 500+ inches of snowfall down South and spread it all over the lower 48 states this year. Glad to see you are enjoying it, Rebecka! One thing seems to be universal. Most dogs absolutely LOVE to romp in fresh snow and I don't see any exceptions in this image :-)
