Day's End

I guess you can tell I'm on a bit of a bird-in-its-habitat kick lately, as well as having the Florida bug thanks to a return trip there this coming week.

I guess there's not much to say about this one...a few spoonbills flew over me at the end of a great day of bird photography and I surprised myself by nailing a couple shots as they did, but after this one started feeding amongst the mangroves, I knew what shot I wanted. You should have heard me talking this bird into that strip of smooth water from 200yds away!

As a bonus, I THINK there's an alligator in the background above and left of the spoonbill. There were certainly plenty around that area.

I tried to retain just a hint of colour on the spoonbill and even the mangroves in this silhouette...this is as-shot and almost straight from the RAW file with the exception of cloning a few very small OOF branches from the far left.

Thanks for looking (please view larger if you have time!).

Nikon D600
Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF-ED VR @ 330mm
ISO 1250
1/2500sec @ f/10
-1EV
tripod mounted

Processing Notes:
Converted from RAW using Phase One Capture One Pro 7
Minor adjustments using Nik Color Efex Pro 4 and Viveza 2 along with cloning of three OOF branches in PS5
Cropped slightly from sides and converted to originally-envisioned panorama

Even in unfamiliar territory you still managed a nice image. It certainly does present the big picture as it relates to the animal and it's habitat. I enjoy the spoonbill in the quieter piece of water foraging for food. Nice color palette as well with the blue of the water contrasting with the orange of the sunset. Now here's a question. As mangroves, as I understand, are salt water inhabitants, I wonder if your alligator might be the much rarer salt water crocodile? Someone from Florida might be able to answer that. Looking forward to some nice images from your trip this year.

Very nice, John. I like your decision to retain a bit of color in the Spoonbill. It seems to work better than a straight silhouette would have.

Talking to the subjects is a red flag in personality disorders. I do too but sometimes it is adult language.
Very clean capture with great lines. :toast:

Interesting image, John. Since you are returning to Florida, you might want to consider putting Fort Desoto in Tampa Bay on your agenda. It has lots to offer in terms of wading birds and shore birds. I'm going to be there this coming Sunday. If you're interested, I can give you some tips on locations.

Very Beautiful John! I live the river of color the spoonbill is standing in. Perfect!

John,
Perfect in every way. I can't believe that the bird heard you and ran straight into the calm water with the reflection. :) The exposure could not have been better. Just enough light to make out the colors in the bird and the mangroves. Excellent leading line into the frame. You cropped this perfectly. I do not have an eye for these kinds of images when I'm in the field and I'm always amazed when photographers see something completely different from what I see. I shoot with a photographer that takes his wife with him frequently and she always comes back with images that we are just blown away with. Neither one of us ever see those. You and Jenaya both have a penchant for it. Keep it up. Just love these.
