Sand In My Shoes

Really enjoyed my first visit to Death Valley last week. I was only there a couple days, but left with a few images I'm happy about, particularly since it was raining(!) most of the 2nd day I was there (driest place in the country… yeah, whatever). Can't complain though because overall there were some fun conditions. However, the rain did cause me to forego my much anticipated visit to the racetrack since rangers believed the playa would be too wet and soft to walk on (if anyone made it out there since last Friday I'm curious what the conditions were like).

Anyway, this was a windy evening on the Mesquite dunes, sand pelting me and causing some anxiety about my gear. The image is a 2-exposure blend. The light was warmer a little later, but I liked the pattern of shadows at this point in the late afternoon, and this particular exposure captured the blowing sands pretty well. C&C much appreciated!

More like an ocean of sand,Jared. I like the sinuous curves in the foreground and can almost feel the sand blowing into my eyes. I think I would tone down the highlights slightly and also clone out the two black specs in the foreground. Great job stinking it out in these conditions. Nice work.

I like the high-key presentation. It gives the image the feel of the hot dry desert, even though it was probably neither. Very nicely done.

You had some nice conditions and I love the light here and what you made of it. I like the foreground sand patterns, the play of light and shadows as well as the sky with its clouds. Good job here on this one

You are lucky to have such favorable conditions, on your first visit, but it is tough to visually portray what is happening here. The large version really shows the energy and the drifting sand. I would adjust the blues and tone down the highlights in the sky, less so on the moving sand and nix the spots on the main dune. Maybe one of the sandbox boy's can chime in and give you some hints. You have a keeper, spend some time on it, for incremental improvements.

Very nice composition Jared and the tones and colors in the large version look great. The blowing sand and dust in the air add a lot to the scene. Great job on this. :toast:

Nice! The hot glare of the sun and on the blowing sand works very effectively.
