Sri Lankan Sambar

After visiting the Horton Plains NP on Sri Lanka we drove of in the jeep and came across this Sambar. When we stopped it came so close I couldn't zoom out anymore. I still think it is a nice image. Does it bother you much that the antlers are cut off like this?

Hello Ellen

WOW, so close !!

Great detail in the head and area. Seems like a veteran with those fringed ears!:)

Good natural catchlight

First time for me seeing this species , looks very much like our White Tail over here but yours is darker . will he shed those antlers?

Thanks for sharing

Bill

Hi Bill! Yes, the antlers will drop yearly. :wavey:

The color and ambiance, the detail and subdued color well carry this. The antl;er tips missing are a very minor issue to me. I think though I would fill in the URC.

The notches in the ears—are those battle scars, ID marks of some sort, or are these domesticated?

Ellen,
Not very often you get this close, great detail, but I do miss the antler tips.

Ellen, I would prefer the antler tips, but that being said, this is a great close up with good detail as already mentioned.

Many will want all the antlers, but there are no hard and fast rules. I think the unusual framing for a portrait effect works well in an interesting way, with the space on the right lending a sense of place. The cropped antlers force the viewer to study face instead of headgear.

Ellen, a very unusual view. As such, I think all of the elements work as you have presented them. The crop is so defined that as a viewer I can get by antler lust quickly and concentrate on the detail in his face. The environment works very well with it. My only wish is to lighten the face just a bit more so that the eyes show a little better. You did well with this amazing opportunity.

Very good close-up of a sambar. I would like to see all of the antlers as they are one of the ID points of these deer. I like the dark face just as it is. Also feel the composition is right on. Thanks for sharing.
