Ibex

A couple of week I posted here an image of an ibex at Creux Du Van in the Swiss Jura Mountains. I was asked if I have a cropped version or another suggestion was to have one with more landscape. This here is a version with more landscape. I was thinking if I would better post this in the landscape gallery......

Hey Bill,

Beautiful animalscape - I love these kind of shots! VERY nicely done. I'm only one person (one vote) and admittedly biased by my strong like of animalscapes, but I think this shot and other like it should definitely be posted in the Wildlife Gallery (would be a shame to waste it on those landscape folks!  )!

My only nit is that I'd love to see a bit of technical info (camera, lens, settings, etc.) posted along with the shot (and I'm aware that the degree of technical info posted with shots differs to a degree between galleries on NPN). But posting that info is definitely not a requirement.

Thanks for sharing this one and wishing for more!

Cheers...

Thanks Bill! If this is even close to full-frame this would make a spectacular print with that camera (in my mind this is the near perfect use of that camera for a wildlife shooter!).

Cheers...

I like them both. Even though the other one is "cleaner," I think this one is more interesting, given the fog, the precipice and the trees. I wouldn't mind seeing the ibex more to the right in frame though (perhaps cropping a few of the trees and the trail in the snow off the right side), which might also give the open foggy space even more of a "yawning chasm" feel.

Powerful photo Bill, breathtaking. Without being present at the time I can't make any suggestions for other compositions, although I could "imagine" this as a vertical as well if that ridge continues on at the bottom in a clean, unobstructed way. I'm sure you made the right call with the situation at hand. Definitely a photo right at home here in the Wildlife Gallery. :toast:

A beautiful scene Roland, the frosted trees and incoming clouds are awesome, but I really like the edge of the cliff leading up to the Ibex. I wonder if this image may be stronger cropped as a vertical so that it includes all the cliff edge, but just a tad of the sky.

Bill,

This is certainly what I would call an animalscape, definitely to be posted in Wildlife.
Great sense of isolation and the precarious positions these animals seem to be "happy" in.
I wonder if a portrait might have given a greater sense of height?
Whatever it is a mighty fine image :toast: :toast:

PS. If possible, I would love to see full view of the right most tree.

Thanks all for your feedbacks and comments. Yes, I think a vertical comp would have been even stronger for the sense of heights. My swiss friend photographer who was with me on that day did a vertical one and it was just awesome

Now this is living on the edge.... I prefer this one over the other one, no doubt about that. This is simply stunning Bill!

Hi again Bill,

I've looked at this image again in light of the comments about going for a vertical crop. I understand the logic and aesthetics of what the vertical crop would provide, but what I like about the shot as you have presented it is the massiveness of the void the Ibex is facing. For me this creates an enhanced feeling of expansiveness to the scene. I think if you went vertical this feeling would be lost and those appreciating this aspect of the shot would be deprived of that characteristic.

Just food for thought...cheers...

Lovely shot Bill. Great light and a great sense of depth. :toast:
I'm happy with the crop you chose as it really conveys the expanse of space filled with cloud/fog, without losing the height aspect.
