Evening all. Pardon my intrusion into Wildlife but I wanted to share a gator shot from last week's trip to Wakulla River, south of Tallahassee, FL. Captured this beautiful specimen smiling broadly for the camera. Hope you enjoy.

Nikon D2x, 1/80 @ f/8, 280mm (70-200 w/ 1.4TC), 320 ISO, Handheld (VR on)

Please view LARGER image for better detail.

Critiques & comments always welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Bill,

A case for not having the 1.4 then you could maybe have got the entire tail in, even so it is still a great image, in awkward light. :toast:

Thanks Ken. I got more of the tail, but the tip wasn't visible; basically what was visible just didn't add to the image so I cropped it.

Man, those teeth really stand out here. It must have just come from getting them cleaned. There's also a nice glow throughout the mouth from the back lighting. You were pretty close with this much gator @ 280mm.

A great look at that big mouth full of teeth, I like the lighting on the gator, I find the bright spots in the bg a little distracting but not a big deal, neat image Bill! :toast:

Hmmm, what did you see on your walk in the woods today? Love the open mouth with those impressive teeth, almost ironic how he appears to be smiling as if happy to see you. The tail exits the frame on the left, don't think it is a big deal myself, but I think you could soften the focus there selectively to reduce the prominence of the tail and shift the focus forward at the same time. You can post shots like this any time Bill!

Hi Bill,

You're more than welcome to venture in here whenever you want!

Here was my absolute first thought when I viewed the image: Great smile, nice detail, great teeth, wish the stubby stump in the lower right corner wasn't there. After more reflection and shifting into my "in a perfect world" mode I thought that the lighting in the background could be toned down perhaps a little, and still didn't like the stubby stump! But overall I like the shot and don't miss seeing the end of the tail at all!

Thanks for venturing in - do it again whenever you want!

Cheers...

Brad

I love the lighting on this big 'gator's face. Processing looks superb. I too wondered about the stub on the right, and if you have pixels to spare, a crop to eliminate it and to zoom in on the subject would be great. His teeth do look like a dental office advertisement!
