Ruffed Grouse

My reason for posting the previous image was to set the stage for this image. The reason the male grouse drums is to attract a mate. After I had spent over an hour watching and photographing this grouse on the log he got off the log, fully extended his ruff and headed deeper into the woods. What I didn't realize was that he was following a female. They proceeded to mate but just way too much brush in front of them to get a shot. After the mating the female flew up into a tree. The male moved into a clearer area and stood there looking up at her. An amazing moment for me.
Nikon D800, 300 2.8, plus 1.4 tc, f7.1, 1/400, ISO 1000. I would have liked to get a lower angle but there was too much brush in the way.

Thanks for looking and hope you enjoy this shot

It's amazing how well the Grouse's distinct pattern serves as camouflage in the background. From your story, the "Wow!" look on the male is almost human.

Great pose and detail in the Grouse. I wish that OOF branch in the foreground wasn't there, but this is an exceptional image even with it. :toast:

That must have been a wondreful moment May. Great to see the ruffles.
My only niggle is that the BG is very cluttered, especially behind the head. It's nicely out of focus but still a bit distracting.

Great job getting this poise May. Love the head turn s well. My only nit is the OOF twigs in front are drawing my eye to them pretty quickly. If you don't mind cloning a touch, I think it would really improve this image.
