Not Wide Enough?

by Ken Watkins

Gallery: WildlifePosted May 6, 2014118 views8 comments
Sometimes when animals come very close even the 200-400 is not wide enough, leading in this case too slight clipping, which hopefully is not too distracting.
This young Male Lion was very curious and spent some time trying too eat a rear view mirror on our open vehicle, luckily he did not try it on me as I was around 1 meter away.
Taken in Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana.
EOS 1DX
200-400mm F4 at 200mm
F5.6
ISO 800

One meter and 200-400 is a problem. Actually, for me, one meter from any lion with any lens is a problem!
Techs look good...framing is the nit as you already mentioned.

Amazing detail. I, personally, LOVE this. Must have been a thrill.

Yeah, it's a bit tight, but I think those of us who have been in this situation also feel pretty fortunate. It's what I'd call a photographer's "first world problem."

Great look at those beautiful amber eyes, Ken.

Really nice detail in this Ken. Did you get a chance to try a vertical comp? It may have been too tight that way as well given how close he was.

The greatest danger, I have realised, is that you are so busy looking through the viewfinder, that you don't realise how close the lion is!

Thanks everybody for your comments, whilst Lions are often highly interested in safari vehicles, I have yet to hear of any attacking passengers who remain still and of course very quiet.
