Hot Flowing Colors

I really enjoy the terrace action at Mammoth Hot Springs. This is a relatively new area that is located so that it can't get either dawn or dusk light. I went exploring comps on a day that varied from light to moderate overcast. In this case, there was enough sun to cast mild shadows, which adds nicely to the textures while letting the highlights glow a bit. Outstanding collection of layers and shapes.
The top half on its own would make a great pano.....

This is such a cool spot, Mark. Looks like you made it back to Montana. Great start on the summer with this exceptional image. Beautiful. I hope to make it up this summer, combo of business and pleasure, can't wait. :toast:

very interesting subject matter with great textures... I could also see a crop of about 1/3 from the bottom, but the comp works nicely as is

Very nice light and color Mark, and your composition works beautifully, and I also like the layers and detail. Excellent work.

First thought was one of a stairway.. And since it's hot this can't the 'stairway to heaven'
The polarizer was instrumental in toning down the highlights, & the soft shadows add a good sense of depth..
Interesting place, well composed.
Great work Mark! :toast:

Awesome framing Mark! I need to get back to Yellowstone... very faint but fond memories of when I went before I was even 10. I would look at increasing the midtone contrast (in luminosity mode, I think) to add a little texture to the formations. Nice work regardless, Mark!

Lovely picture Mark! The layers and colors make for a nice composition, while the sunlight adds a bit of a third dimension.

This is lovely Mark and you caught the light perfectly on this image and the colors are outstanding. I have not played with my polarizer since our Florida trip but this Image has me motivated to get it out of the camera bag and start trying some of the lessons you taught me. Are you out west now? If so I hope you have a great trip and I will let you know about the fall trip.
Well done on this capture . . . :toast:

There is a lot to enjoy in this from the fascinating texture to the bold color. The terracing creates strong compositional lines leading my eye up the image.

Mark, The details and light are fantastic.

I think this might benefit from a neutral density filter. It might cut down on the light just a bit.

Best wishes,

Mark, as I recall you've had a few shots from this area in YNP that were all simply wonderful, this one is no exception. Very nice work here.
