I shot one other variation on this swallowtail theme and wonder which, if either, works. Canon 5D Mark II. 1/1250, f 3.2 Shooting macro is definitely outside my comfort zone since it's such a radically different way of looking, so comments welcome indeed.

Lucy,
I too found Macro outside my comfort zone but once I started, I found a very interesting world that had gone un-noticed and now find very amazing and addictive with encounters I could have never imagined.
I like the idea here and the details you managed in the wing tip however, the BG seems way to busy and does not compliment the subject matter IMHO.

I like where you're going here Lucy.
I think it might work better with more of the BF's wing tip, & a bit more DOF on the wing itself. :wavey:

Interesting presentation, Lucy. I like the bg and the creative approach to this macro butterfly image.

That sharpness in the bf tail is great and there are some nice oof colors in the background. I could see cropping this to the bottom of the pink on the right to keep the good parts of the background while giving more emphasis to the shape and details in the tail.

Thank you so much for your input. I go back and forth about the bg colors. On the one hand I think it provides some interest and since it's oof doesn't detract too much, but then again if it were simplified maybe the tail would become that much more prominent.
Here's one alternative I came up with. Comments as always appreciated.
