Crimson Delight

In the sunlight and winds this flower was such an elegant crimson that it was all but impossible to capture the proper exposure. I finally retreated, flower and foliage in hand, to the house to capture the back of this flower in the still quiet of the indoors.

I used a tripod and a remote release and in this case, I used a flash. Manual exposure with matrix metering, un-cropped with a 105mm lens and a D700 at ISO 200, f/22, and 1 s exposure.

In this particular version, I add a black and white filter with reduced fill opacity to reduce the effect of the flash on the white portions of the flower.

My first attempt at processing this image was a black and white version which can be seen here ...

Thank you in advance, for your comments and critiques.

Carol

So many things to like here, Carol - especially the crystalline textures of the flower and mid-distance leaves with their beautifully subdued colours. I love the splay of the petals too on their black ground. I only wonder how it would be if the fg leaf were also sharp ?

Carol: I really like what you did to tame the direct flash. The B&W is really nice also but I do prefer the color. Well done.>=))>

Although both versions are very nice, Carol, I prefer the B/W. I don't think I could suggest much to make it better. I really enjoyed it.

Very strong comp Carol. I like both the color and the b&w but think I prefer the color. No suggestions except I do agree with Ian that I'd like to see this with the fg leaf sharp. That would be a different image though. Very fine work.

Carol - F/22 has brought out a ton of details on the petals. I love that reddish color with a brownish hue. Two small observations are the leaf tip merging with the flower on the right just above the throat and the slightly OOF frontal leaf.

I usually prefer non-black backgrounds.

Hi Carol :wavey: Both versions are very pleasing to behold.. the rich color and detail on the petals makes this one the winner for me
