While at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, we toured the Botanic Gardens. While in the greenhouse, I took photos of a number of flowers. Perhaps you know the name of this orchid.

Nikon D800 ISO800 1/400 f/4 Nikkor 24-120 f/4 lens 120mm White balance cloudy Taken indoors with diffused light with no flash.

Processed in Lightroom, PS6, NIK and TK

Patrick, can't help you ID this orchid. If you do stacking, this would have been a great candidate. IMO, the OOF portions of this beautiful flower detract from the image. Processing and BG are fine.

Best wishes,
Carol

Patrick: Looks like a Lady Slipper variant to me. I like your DOF and plane of focus choices. I see Carol's point about the stack but I personally prefer the challenge of the one exposure capture and think you met that challenge admirably.>=))>

I've seen one here in the Orchid greenhouse at the Bamboo Farm, but the name escapes me. Next time I am there, I will check it out. It is certainly related to the Lady Slipper.

A bit dark, I'm thinking. As I remember this, the hairy protrusions on the "wings" were an interesting feature to me. A higher POV might have picked up more of this feature. The BG is problematic, but livable, as the flower commands the image fairly well. Selective brightening could help this. Also, as Carol suggested, stacking would be a good pursuit here.

Patrick - Might be variety of Paphiopedilum. They are Lady Slippers.

Great shapes and Colors. Stacking might work out nice for these flowers with Odd shape and projections

Patrick,

I can't help with the ID but I like the image as posted. I like your dof and pov choice to bring out the bilateral symmetry. The bg in this interests me and complements the subject IMHO.

If things are still you can always stack but I like this choice.

Patrick:

You have done an excellent job here with a single exposure. Sure stacking may give more DOF to the flower but I like what you have done here as the slight OOF parts are not problematic. Also like the bg greenery.
