Eastern Towhee

I wanted to practice hand-holding my 100-400 this morning, and this Eastern Towhee was nice enough to pose for me up off the ground. This lens is nice and sharp when I don't use a TC with it...I'm wondering if the newer teleconverters would help remedy that?

50D, 100-400@400, ISO 400, F5.6, 1/200 Thanks for looking and commenting/critiquing!
I appreciate it! Sharon

Nice one, Sharon. Great look at that beautiful eye. My only nits are that he looks a bit high in the frame. Also, I wish the tail had not been partially obscured. Nice shot regardless.

Hi Sharon: Nice image of the Towhee. Looks sharp where it counts. Not wild about the leaves obscuring part of the tail, but not that big a deal. I don't think this lens works well with any converters. If you use any converters on this lens with your 50D, you'll lose autofocus anyway as it will be at f/8 with a 1.4x or even worse f/11 with a 2X.

Sharon,
A very nice shot. Agree with your other comments. No "piling on". :toast:

Excellent sharpness, Sharon, particularly for hand holding at that shutter speed. You got a great pose from the Towhee. I also like the nice slanted line formed by the leaves. I don't know about the new TCs with the 100-400. I never had much luck with that lens, so I finally traded it in for a 300 f4. I do know that you'll lose the ability to autofocus if you use a TC with that lens.

Sharon,
This is beautifully sharp. Nice job on the hand holding part. The leaf obscuring the tail does not bother me that much and I like the background and the perch. Terrific light and eye detail. Very nice image Sharon.

Very good sharpness for being hand held! Nice color in the towhee. I seldom use my TC as with my lenses I loose too much sharpness. Thanks for sharing.

Nice bird and looks sharp to me. No nits from this side. With the TC things my be softer I assume. Cheers, Hans
