Smoky Mountains +REPOST

by Carolyn Derstine

We just returned from a vacation at Smoky Mountain National Park. This is the classic view of the Smokies with the haze over the layered mountains. It was a somewhat misty day so that contributed to the hazy condition.

Canon 60D. 142mm at F/13 for 1/160 sec. ISO 320.

I love the layers and the aerial perspective. I do think the blues are over-saturated somewhat. Honestly the green foreground doesn't do much for me since it's out of key with the blues, and there's a large area there with no detail. I'd suggest a pano crop, taking the green ridge out completely. I know that's kind of radical, but I think the image would have more impact. Da Blues is the thing, here.

Thanks for your comments, Preston. Something didn't "feel" quite right about the original but I wasn't sure why. I took your advice and made a pano crop and desaturated a bit. I do like this better! I believe you pinpointed the problem.

Love those layers, Carolyn, and never tire of this 'classic' view of the Smokies. Always reminds of the opening scenes of the movie, Last of the Mohicans. The pano crop as Preston suggested does work quite well. An alternative (if you really want to keep the foreground layer) would be to desat the green in the foreground trees a bit, add a little blue perhaps, ie to get that layer's color similar to the rest of the image. Either way, a fine image in my opinion.

Wow, Carolyn, I think this is really nice. The re-post does work quite a bit better, I was thinking that is some kinda blue. I just enjoy looking at these kind of shots. Been a long time since I've seen the Smokies in person and I really enjoyed this.

i like the uncropped version but i'd be backing right off that saturation slider ... and maybe even explore something in b&w .... lovely scene though.

What a great, classic view of the ridges receding into the distance, Carolyn. The hint of pink in the sky is a fine addition. I like the green at the bottom because it puts the viewer closer to the scene (rather than viewing from a great distance), but it does seem over saturated relative to the rest of the image. Might be worth backing off on the saturation in the green.

Carolyn, I like your original comp better with the foreground included for the same reasons that Mark mentioned. The green does look over saturated on my monitor and I agree backing off on that would probably help. I also think Vance's idea of adding a little blue there might work well too. Anyways it is a great view and I enjoy looking at this.

Very nice scene Carolyn and I agree with Vance's comments as I prefer the original composition. The fore ground trees add a
lot to me in the scene. Very nice take.
