She's Playin' His Song

by Howard Cheek

This was shot indoors in an air conditioned 'barn', at the Cheek reunion last Saturday.
It's my uncle Ron in a candid shot. He paused briefly in front of this wall mural, so I took the shot.
Ron will be 82 this fall & suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
F/2.8, 1/160th, ISO 1600, 1D M3, 40mm f/2.8 pancake HH.
I cloned out a shoulder bottom left corner, and the back of head bottom right. Sepia toning, antique style frame.

Howard, as a subscriber to the APUG (analog photographers user group) site, I see many portraiture, B&W, street shots, and candid captures such as this. As it is obviously an opposite to what we normally see with our NPN posted nature images it gives me an entirely different perspective and view of another world of photography.

With that said this meets and to a certain extent surpasses the norm I'm use to seeing in that talented arena at APUG. This works so well in many ways. Knowing some of the history of the shot does help, but even on a level of the unknown the candid perspective is very intriguing. This is a nice story telling scene....

So sorry to hear about the circumstances your uncle Ron is having to live with. I can relate quite well having seen my own father pass away a few years back from the same illness. My father was 86 and in very good health physically. But sadly the disease takes over and shuts things down over time. :frown:

Excellent image! Really nicely composed, with the background mural and the overhead lights and Ron cooperatively looking toward the background lady and the open space. You captured a good expression on his face, too. Great job on the processing too. Fine presentation. I like this a lot.

Sorry to hear about Ron's Alzheimer's. That is a tough one for him and those around him.

This is very cool, Howard. I'm sure it will go into the Cheek family archives to document Uncle Ron while he was still able to participate in the reunion. Besides that, it is a really good photograph and I would expect no less. Very emotional and touching.

Howard,
I wish to echo the sentiments and comments already made. You truly captured Uncle Ron in a perfect setting to highlight the character in is face and portray the wisdom of his years.

This does have a haunting quality to it that's hard to catch.
