This is from the Badlands National Park on Christmas Eve year before last. The title is from Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series of books. First thing I thought of when I saw these formations.

I did a similar image in Photo Art a while back.

Nikon D800
Zeiss 100mm macro lens
LR, CC, NIK Silver Efex, TK's actions and masks

Comments and suggestions welcome and appreciated.

This is a really nice image for me, Pat Love the subject, comp and bw processing. Lots of variable tones and I like it that you kept some black shadows. Super job!! Chet

Very nice b/w image Pat. I like the comp and the contrast between the jagged hills and wispy clouds. The details look great in the larger version.

Black and white works very nicely. I really like the drama in the clouds and sky and wonder if it might be possible to add a little more of that magic to the rocks and foreground by adding contrast to some of the grays.

Pat, your b&w processing is as beautiful as your floral still lifes. Incredible separation of tones on this one, both in the sky/clouds, and in the rock formations.

Tony,

I appreciate the suggestion. I'll play some with the grays. Many thanks.

Pat, you're making really good progress with your B&W landscapes--good for you!

I agree with Tony that you might want to tweak the greys a bit. Also, from a composition standpoint, you might consider a crop from the left in order to pull the main peak a bit off center.

I really like the tones and textures in the sky.

Pat: Treating myself to a stroll through your recent shots. I like this a lot, especially the conversion and overall mood it creates. I've only been to the Badlands in high summer so this winter view is a nice treat. >=))>

The badlands are a neat place and this is a fine view. I especially like the sky in this view.

Thanks folks.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I'll do the crop in a repost where I think I've done what was suggested in the midtones.

Thanks very much to the moderators and to those who commented. I just went to look at last week's picks. To say that I'm surprised would be the height of understatement. (smile)
