Nice shot, Sandy. The call is great, but I'm also impressed at the clear view. Seems like all that grass gets in the way a lot!

Nice looking shot of this not often seen Bustard. I like the calling pose and the exposure and detail look great. Good looking frame.

Nice clean shot Sandy!
it must have been really a task to get a low angle as it's very hard to find clear fields between the lens & the subject

Sanndy,
Not wishing to be picky, but I actually think this is a Northern Black Korhaan, whatever it is it is a superb capture :toast: :toast:

Terrific shot Sandy.
I'm with Ken on the ID though, definitely a Northern Black Korhaan. :toast:

Hi, Ken and Martin, We do believe it is a white-quilled bustard and not the korhan, for several reasons -
1. We were not anywhere near the extreme southern area of S Africa, where the korhans are.
We were all over in the area much further north where the white quills are.
2.In flight, there was the extensive white on the black primaries. Newman's " Birds of SAfrica" says this white is the only difference between the 2 - "on the ground, the 2 are indistinguishable," .

Thanks for the nice comments, though!

Sandy,

Just to confuse the ID even more both names are apparently used even though it is apparently the same bird.
This comes from "Birds Of Africa south of the Sahara" by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan. Korhaans are all over Southern Africa. Not that this really matters
