Jumping into Summer

Just fit the little one in, this fawn's 'jumping into summer' during the first week of the season.
F/8, 1/2500th, ISO 640, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 @ 11:11am.
I left the small purple Horsemint, it's rather small. Thought it more of a positive than a negative.

So here it is with the Horsemint out. And I realize the comp's tight, but I was lucky just get it all in. It was close.
Any feedback appreciated :wavey:

Excellent small action shot of this fawn, Howard. Perfect detail in the larger version. Hard for me to make a easy call with the Horsemint. I do lean toward the one without it. Optically just a slight distraction there I guess.
Regardless, you've got the main capture to play with either way........ :toast:

I like both images. In a perfect world, I would wish for more room all around. However, like you said, you were lucky to get it all in. Very nice shot. Super cute.

Howard the horsemint is not a problem for me, agree a little more room all around, the large view shows lots of detail showing what a very good shot it is.

Hi Mike,
No doubt that it looks better with more space. As it is I already added a small strip top above the ear, should've mentioned it..
So I basically shaved a bit off the back & bottom to pull out this 4:5 comp..
The real problem are the grasses in front. Hard to clone, with the resulting repeating patterns.
I have quite a few sharp leaping "air" shots that I would've like to use, but have missing body parts.
This is when I cuss & wish I'd held onto my old 100-400mm:wink:

This is so cute Howard. On one hand I would have liked more space in front (and all around actually) but then you'd miss all the intricate details on this cute fawn...so it works for me as is.

Hey Howard,

Definitely agree with all on the cute factor - off the charts in that regard! And have to say the horsemint isn't too big a deal for me at all (either way). The shot does feel quite a bit too tight for me given it's an action shot (where room for subject to move into is probably considerably more important than in a shot of a static subject). I'm a little curious why you went 4:5 on this one as opposed to the 3:2 native aspect ratio of the camera (and I'm sure you had a good reason...).

Cheers...

Brad

Just a great shot. great detail and action. I didn't notice the horsemint at first because the fawn just captured my attention. But since you mentioned it I think I like the second image just a bit better. For me there is just enough difference in space in front of the fawn as apposed to behind that I doesn't bother me.

Nice action and very cute image Howard. The Horsemint doesn't bother me in the slightest and I actually like small flowers with fawn shots and think they add to the innocense of the animal. Of course I do wish you had a bit more room, but sill like this very much. I do have the same question as Brad about the aspect ratio? I am guessing maybe a distracting bush or branch was to the left? Or did you have more room behind than in front and cropped for placement?
