Catalina Collared Fox
by Ed Williams
This little Catalina Island Fox apparently has developed the habit of sitting in one spot at the side of the road to look for handouts from the tourists that drive by according to the bus driver. It was there both coming and going several hours apart. Since they are the apex predators on Catalina Island, they don't seem too disturbed by the cars and people going by. We were lucky enough to spot a second Catalina Island Fox along the route that wasn't so dependent on passers by.
Canon 60D, f6.3, iso400, -0.3 Exp bias, 210 mm (100-400 IS lens) about 75% of original handheld from a bus.

Collaring is in my opinion not dangerous but totally pointless, this constant desire to "learn" about animals behaviour has seemingly become the only way to employ otherwise largely useless students who contribute nothing to our understanding of animal behaviour that could not be achieved by just watching. Has it ever saved an animal or improved its living conditions?
