Bubble Bath

I've had a lot of otter sightings over the years in Yellowstone. This one was pretty unique. We came across a trio of otters heading up the Gibbon River in late May.

They were generally sticking to the far shoreline, so at one point we drove on ahead and found a path down to the river, where I was hoping to shoot them at ground level from across the water. We were stationed next to a large cascade when, lo and behold, the otters popped out right in front of us on our side of the river.

We quickly backed up the hill to give them room. They played around a bit in the roiling foam at the bottom of the waterfall before clambering up over some logs and continuing upriver. Over the course of a couple miles, the otters provided several photographers with good photo ops at relatively close range, but we were fortunate to have them to ourselves during the "bubble bath."

Sweet image, Max. I like the fast bubble bath-it fit's otter personality. You must have been very close to get this with a 70-200.

Dennis, it is cropped a bit. In our haste to get out of the way, I left my big lens and tripod standing on the bank, which is why this was shot with the shorter lens. I do have a few throw-aways with the tripod in the way.

Very appropriately named Max. Looks like he is having fun and very curious about you. Only seen these guys once by Oxbow Bend and they were on the other side of the river, so no chance at a good image. This must have been real fun.

Hey Max,

This one is certainly unique! A very fitting title - and must have been a lot of fun to watch. Nice job on getting the exposure right!

Cheers...

Interesting setting with good eye contact Max, I think this one would be easier to appreciate well viewed at a larger size. :toast:
