We were returning to our camp and had stopped to chat with the campground host when this Bison decided to ford Slough creek and come straight through the campground. I wish I could have maneuvered to a place that avoided the foreground foliage, but there wasn't any available.

7D, 300mm f4 +1.4TC, hand held, f5.6, 1/400, iso 640, -1/3 stop compensation (for a previous shot-forgot to reset), aperture priority. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped from the sides to a 4x5 aspect ratio-full height. Taken June 19th at 9:58 am.

Your comments and criticisms are appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Hi Dennis,

I'd pull up the exposure another +1/3 if that is possible. The position of the foliage is perfect--it adds an element of concealment and intrigue to the image. The highlight in the eye appears to be nice and crisp.....................Jim

All things considered, this came out quite well Dennis.
The FG doesn't bother, I agree with Jim. Tight up top, but you know that.
Even with the < 1/3 stop, there's plenty of detail left there in front, nice catch-light as well.
And if wishes were pennies I'd be a millionaire

Hi Dennis,

Dramatic moment for sure - would have been great to see. And you did quite a good job of turning it into a dramatic image!

I'm in agreement with you about the foreground foliage, mostly because it overlaps and minimizes the impact of the water streaming off the front of the bison. I'd personally like to see more shadow detail opened up on the head...with the nose reflecting so brightly I don't think lightening up the facial region would look unnatural at all.

Cheers...

Brad
