Wotan's Light

A thin band of light cut across the face of Wotan's Throne on the north rim of Grand Canyon during the Fourth of July weekend. As always, your critique and suggestions are welcome.

A beautiful scene, for sure. I like the natural processing a lot -- kudos for that -- but want more detail in the blocked out portions of the image. Just a squinch...my personal taste. Great image all in all.

Beautiful light, and a unique Grand Canyon composition. Not the typical view. Nice, dramatic sky, too.

One slight nit: I notice a slight oversharpening in the web presentation of many of your photos, Doug. A fair amount of haloing. I see this in your coffee shots on Facebook as well (BTW, a concept that I quite enjoy). What sharpening technique do you use? A couple weeks ago I started using TK's sharpening and it has made a huge difference on my web presentations. His actions do a great job cleaning up halos. Just a thought, as I think a cleaner sharpening method on your web posts would put your work over the top.

A great shot. The high contrast presentation looks good as does the centered comp. Good job controlling the sky brightness overall. One cloud looks a little overcooked. There's a real feeling of grandeur here.

I like this a lot.
Very dramatic and moody.
I also think bringing up the shadows a bit would look good.

Great shot, Doug. I'm guessing this will make a fabulous print. Upon closer examination I can see Joe's point. I would not, however, seen the halos had they not been pointed out. Sweet light and you did well with it.

Doug I really like this. I especially like the impact of the contrasting light and shadow. The warm light in the clouds and on the butte are phenomenal!! :toast:

The light on the Throne and the distant clouds is lovely, Doug. I too would like to see just a bit more detail in the shadows along the bottom 1/4.

The high contrast works nicely in the larger version, not so much in the standard size. That said since so much of the frame is in shadow, a touch more shadow detail might be the way to go.

Thanks all for your input. I will go back and lighten the shadows some and reprocess the clouds to protect the highlights, valid points from you.

The light here is fantastic. I might see opening up the shadows a touch, however, if printed large, this darker presentaion may be more effective, IMO. Either way, great work!

Very interesting play of light and shadows, with a great background cloud action as well. I concur with the comments about bringing up the shadows slightly, but a very impressive image.

I agree with the other comments about opening up the darks a bit and the slight over-sharpening. I can see the halo in the large version. TK's Web Sharpening action is all I use for Web images. I love the light and the alternating bands of light and dark.

Beautifully lit scene, Doug. It feels a bit underexposed on my monitor, though that does add to the drama.

Maybe a little dark for me, but very dramatic as presented. I don't feel I'm missing much, as the banding and clouds are the center points.
