Steely Sunrise

This past week I was on vacation - while I was literally only 5 miles from home it was another world away as we stayed at a relatives beach house on Fire Island... just a short walk to the ocean or the bay, no cars and living amongst nature in a national seashore. One morning a deer woke us up before sunrise as it clambered around on the deck outside (there is a severe over-abundance of deer as there are no cars/hunters to kill them, and plenty of people who think it's cute to hand-feed them). My wife and I seized the opportunity and took off to the ocean to see the sunrise which was basically a bust. I chose to make the best of it by doing some long exposures of the surf.

Nice shot Luke, the cool tones really make this one work for me :toast:

I think the image is very cool and works well. Personally I would turn down the color saturation in Photoshop color mode by about 10-15 pts. But that is just my taste.

You definitely caught the motion of the ocean here Luke, the receding wave in the foreground really pulls you in. I'm liking the layers created by the crashing waves.

Love the blue layers in this, Luke. Could make a pretty cool b/w also. Very nice.

I think this works fairly well. The only issue I see is the noise in the sky.

Gary - thank you regarding B&W. I thought that initially and had processed it in B&W then switched to color just to see what it would look like and this was the result so I stuck with it. I have a few more similar shots so I may do a B&W one next.

I like the action in the foreground surf, the long view, and the overall blue tones.

Cool image, Luke. I like the dynamic. I agree with Mark about pulling back on the blue saturation some. Very moody image, sir.

Great wave action. The blues feel quite strong, a little too much so IMO. Glad your vacation went well; sounds like an interesting place!

Love the surreal effect. The blue looks unnatural, but I think that actually adds to the mood here.
