Brimstone

An image from Brimstone Canyon in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A beautiful place to explore, a challenging place to photograph. This image works fine in color too, but I felt that B&W made it a bit more evocative.

I greatly appreciate all comments and feedback.

This rocks, Phil! The textures, shapes and tonality are superb. It's nice to see a B&W slot canyon photograph.

I also think the B & W treatment is really good.
The textures and spaces are superb.
It gives an even nicer treatment of the light in the canyon.

Very imaginative comp, Phil. B&W did this justice.

As others have mentioned, the tonality works really well here Phil, and that's what makes this a successful monochrome conversion. And it is nice to see a monochrome from this location!

I really like how the light is falling on the walls to enhance their structure. Terrific image.

Really sweet b/w, Phil. I think I like slots in monochrome more than color. Such cool texture and light. Beautiful. :toast:

BW works very well here. Nice rich black tones. Maybe it's the composition, but what I enjoy most about most sandstone slots is how the eye moves through the canyon. I don't get that sense of flow with this shot - don't think it has anything to do with BW or if it were color. It could be the relatively centrally placed center of the slot :confused:I do like the upper portions more than the lower, maybe because there is more room to see the forms.

Your image works amazingly as an abstract to me.
