Widow Skimmer

I spent Saturday morning trying to find some good subjects for photography. The pickings were very slim with most dragonflies being extremely skittish. This male widow skimmer sat for about 2 minutes on this grape leaf. Unfortunately, there was not enough room between background and subject to get any significant isolation from the background. K5 IIs 200mm f4 DA* (1/160sec at f14, ISO 500) LR exposure and shadows, CS5 Topaz Detail, High Pass Filter bright light for sharpening......................Jim

Excellent look at this DF in some nice light, Jim. I like the great view of the detail and color. Yes, the bg and perch are a bit messy, but the image shows the DF in its environment and, because the bg is a pretty uniform color, the df shows well against the bg.

The df looks really good, especially with good sharpness in the wings pointing this way. I agree that the background is busy but also that it's not very distracting. You could probably reduce that even more by doing some burning-in through a mask that works on the brighter areas.
