Portland Head Lighthouse

Due to poor timing and bad weather during my costal trip of Maine last week, this was the only lighthouse I was able to shoot in good light. The ride to get there took a bit longer than we expected so I only had a short time to scout the area, find a good spot and set up. This was my first purely photographic trip with the Olympus system and I have to admit that after 30 years of photographic ventures, I've never had this many keepers. I'm in love with Olympus cameras and lenses. Shot with the Olympus E-M1 and 12-50mm lens at 23mm, f8, ISO 100 and 8 seconds using an 8 stop ND filter. Raw file was processed exclusively in Lightroom.

Excellent, Steve, beautiful light and comp, love the ocean treatment. I was there last month for sunset, you picked a great location to shoot the lighthouse. :toast:

I like this a lot Steve. We have a place in Boothbay for over 30 yrs but I never explored the lighthouses near Portland (about and 1 1/2 hrs south of us). I like your view point here and inclusion of the pebbles, rocks and cliffs since the add to the sense of place.

You might want to consider cropping to simplify. I found myself wondering whether the subject was the rocks (darker) or the lighthouse -- perhaps because each are lit differently. The upper half or upper right of the image could be an excellent image in its own right.

Thanks for all your comments. Patrick mentioned cropping which starting me thinking that maybe those lighter dry rocks are detracting a bit from the main subject. I may just crop a tad off the bottom and darken those rocks. Thanks Patrick.

Beautiful picture, I like the composition and the light is extraordinary, you got it at right time probably a question of minute. Bravo!
