Came across this guy this weekend on Lake Michigan shoreline. My two little girls were able to lay in the sand with me while I got some good looks at him along with some other Sanderlings. This guy came within a few feet of us, so it was pretty exciting for my kids....oh, and me.

Canon 7d
Sigma 150-500mm @ 500mm
1/1500 @ f5.6
ISO 800
Handheld, laying in the sand

I like the low angle and the water kicked up behind the bird's foot. The shot is surprisingly soft, though. With that camera and lens I'd expect more detail in the chest and a crisper image overall? Did you do any post-processing?

Nice low angle provided a great opportunity. For me the issue is that the bird is very soft. At 1/500 it shouldn't have been camera movement. Focus was off? Or post processing ?

Great angle, Jason, and the exposure looks spot on. The plumage looks just a trifle soft to my eye, you might try a touch of sharpening on the bird. It must have been a fun experience for you and your daughters.

What a great background. I like that the wave provides just enough texture without becoming a distraction.
