Mighty Oaks....

from little acorns grow. Maybe this fawn will be a really well endowed buck with a huge rack. Who knows. I'd been by this area many, many times but it wasn't until I saw this fawn standing next to this valley oak that I realized how large it was. It's a massive tree. So I thought showing the deer standing next to it really puts things into perspective. A great learning tool. I didn't do much to this image. I brought some of the shadows back, added a bit of warmth and contrast. That's about it. Comments and critiques most welcome and appreciated.

Hi Peter! I like this image for three primary reasons: the oak, the light, and the sweet, alert expression and pose from the fawn. I also like your comp and overall colour palette, but don't love the busy, distracting branches behind the fawn (not much you could do here, but decreasing contrast and structure and opening the shadows in post MIGHT help a bit). I would personally crop slightly from the left to eliminate the sliver of lighter tones from that edge, even though I know you're wanting to emphasize the size of the trunk so don't want to trim any more away than necessary.

We don't have oaks up our way, and every time I am traveling in an area that does have them, I marvel at how photogenic they are!

Nice environmental frame.

This is very successful in contrasting the size of that tree and the fawn! I think you tech adjustments came out just about right.
