A Stitch in Time

This is a blended image. One image was taken of the clouds and sky and just a little bit of land and the other was of the canyon, lighting, and the bottom of the cloud. My widest focal length is 28mm, and this is two 28mm shots blended together. The line-up of the land pretty much decided how these would fit together.

It's also a temporal blend because the time between shots is about 33 minutes according to the EXIF data. The first image (clouds and sky) was taken when the moon was still behind a cloud and I felt a bit of land would be enough to anchor the image. However, when the moon started lighting the foreground, I knew I needed to point the camera down and capture the moonlit canyon too. But I continued to include the area below the cloud in the image because I didn't want to miss any lightning strikes, and that's when this triple bolt occurred (all at once).

While the blended image is a bit static with the square frame and symmetrical elements, I don't mind. This is one of those rare occasions when things came together nicely and I'm just happy to have gotten a picture that shows it all.

Momo Vuyisich and Doug Koepsel were here this night too, and I'm pretty sure Doug has already posted an image or two of this. It was pretty special to be here and share the event with friends.

I worked to find the right combination of color, texture, and brightness to adequately suggest nighttime. Your thoughts and recommendations would, as always, be appreciated.

Canon 5D2, 28-300@28, ISO 100, f/6.3, 30 sec for both images

Wow. The detail and depth in this is remarkable Tony. I find it difficult to decide on what part of the image I like best, but I think it has to be the canyon and its colors. I would normally suggest making the canyon somewhat darker to make it more realistic but the thought of hiding the detail keeps me from doing so. Superb work!!

Simply amazing. I like the balance between sky and foreground even if not strictly natural.

Boy, another beauty, Tony. You know a lot of people are not into square crops, but I'm not one of them. I think they work quite well in many instances. The large view is phenomenal and I really like that the canyon shows the detail it does. Pretty sweet as is, although I could see a crop from the top eliminating some of the clear sky, perhaps down to just above the electric highlights in the cloud. Either way a home run in anybody's ballpark. Really nice!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this one, Tony. Remarkable. IMHO, I think this one is much stronger, in terms of comp and color renditions, than the two previous lighting captures that you posted recently (although there are nice too).

I love this, especially knowing that it is a nighttime image, but without that knowledge it would be bit odd that that sky is so dark (kind of like an over-polarized blue). I don't know if darkening the foreground would help or just ruin it.

The catch on all those lightning bolts is terrific, Tony. The square crop and centered action work fine for me especially since the line of the canyon leads there and there's good supporting interest on both sides throughout the frame. Technically, since I can see stars above the cloud, thus the foreground should be much darker, but this tells a great story as presented.

Good job putting all the pieces together. Important to be transparent in these things. Killer result.

Wow... Amazing capture, and what a display by the weather. Must have been hard to contain your excitement while capturing and editing this image! This definitely looks like nighttime, and natural to me. Again, wow... :)

Without the explanation of it being moonlit, this looks to me like a late light daylight image with stars out. I might either lose the stars or darken the foreground, the latter perhaps achieving more of your stated goal to suggest nighttime? It is a dramatic image. The fact it is a blend of images taken a significant time apart really doesn't work for me philosophically, but that is very much a personal preference, and the full disclosure is very much appreciated.

A. Have a vision of the scene
B. Photograph those contributing components to achieve your vision… in multiple frames, if necessary
C. Apply proper processing
D. Display and frame a ‘killer’ photo

Check, check, check, check….amazing shot!

What more can I add? This is a stunner! Even though I don't usually like blends widely separated in time.

This is a remarkable image for my tastes. I like the sharp shadow and lighting in the canyon as is. Congratualtions on the image.

What a great evening light show that was. I too think a slight CW rotation and slight darkening of the canyon would be a benefit. Otherwise, sehr gut. :wavey:

Beautiful blend. The cloud is impressive by itself but to capture the lightning as well made this a killer combination. Beautiful color and texture in the canyon, too. Great image.

It's a great shot Tony, I especially appreciate that you go to lengths to explain that this is not a one shot image. Not only describing the blend of the two 28mm shots but also that the clouds/sky and foreground were shot at differing times. I feel that all too often people seem quite happy to 'forget' to mention this level of processing.
