Taking the plunge

I'm not a big fan of composite photography but I figure at least when you explain yourself it's kind of acceptable. At the moment I'm struggling to work out my own code of ethics and decide how far I'm willing to push the boundaries. This kid jumped in the water a good 20 minutes before I shot the main part of the image but I felt like the shot kind of worked with him in there. At one point 5 or 6 kids were jumping in what seemed like a dangerous cauldron of water.
I also removed two people who were stood on the rocks in the background. Other than that the image is pretty much as shot.

Any views, or criticism would be much appreciated.

Andrew, I like the photo a lot but I am not sure why you thought it needed the kid?
It will get moved to Man & Nature.
The sunset and SS works well. The kid jumping in adds nothing for me, he hardly shows up.

Killer shot of kings bath. Watch your magenta in the water...esp fg. And yea...always crazy kids (some of them my friends) jumping in there. :P

Maybe a bit too much magenta but otherwise a spectacular image. Beautiful light.

Thanks for the pointers, I'm seeing the magenta, I can't believe I didn't notice it before.

Very nice image. I love the glow on the rocks in the foreground. Pull out the magenta and good to go.

To me a photo stands or falls on its own merits. I don't want to hear much about how it was made, since this is art.

This is nice Andrew! :toast:

I know you have had some calibrations issues on your computer, but your purple / magenta here in the water are a little splotchy. :)

Thanks Mark at least you guys think I have an image. I wasn't too sure as there's so much darks from the black volcanic rock.

The light and movement here are very dramatic. The comp. also works very well. The "jumper" is hard to find and would be very easy to clone out if you wanted to. I agree that he's not adding anything to the story told by this image.

Andrew. Love the light and sense of danger. I really had to look to find the jumper...I'd clone him out... :toast:

Nice image and great light! I agree regarding the saturation concerns already noted.

Beautiful light and location. Agree that the colours, magenta is off but also the yellows look a bit too strong.

congrats on the Pick for this, Andrew! Obviously you're going in the right direction. i could go either way on the composite: hard to find the person, so maybe raise the shadows a bit or clone him out. Love the comp and lighting ( except for how dark the shadows are, color errors-- all fixable). and even though it makes me crazy that kids are jumping into that roiling water, I think it would be fun to see him better-- would add some excitement and uniqueness to the image.
