WC - Flaming Mountain

Taken this past January. It's only about 30km (20 miles) from my house. I had been out looking for moose in this area (actually saw some), but as the light faded made the decision to head home. That's when I noticed this bright colour in my rear-view and headed for a higher vantage point.

The wind was blowing snow over the ridges, with the setting sun at just the right angle to make that drifting snow simply glow. Had to pull over and take a few shots.

Karen, this is a fine take on the sunset light catching the snow blowing off the peaks. I've seen that regularly in Montana, but not with this kind of warm lighting. The foreground trees and road make a good leading line back to the snowy ridge and then those peaks with their glowing caps of blowing snow. This is a great winter scene.

The backlit snow blowing off the peaks does look like fire. Nice contrast between warm and cold colors.

Karen, You nailed it. That orange is one of my favorite colours. I like the foreground and fence lines leading up to the peaks. My only suggestion would be a 1 degree tilt to the left. Everything is slanting to the right. Mountain height and the foreground tree line. With a slight rotation you might stop my eye from gliding off the page. :toast:

Whoa! Very cool shot, Karen. That blowing snow at the peaks is amazing. Glad you peeked in the rear-view and beat it to a good vantage point. Lots of fun when something like that happens.
P.S. Congrats on the Pick! And I love the lighting patterns on the foreground snow, too.

Hey Karen,
Sorry for not commenting on this sweet image earlier but better late than never. Your decision to capture this scene was well worth the effort and you came away with a terrific composition for all the reasons already mentioned.
Congratulations on the WP . . . :toast:
