D800 600mm F5.6 1/1000 sec ISO 400 handheld

Have been struggling all week at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge to get a decent shot of the many male Ring neck pheasants in the area, but they are just too wary. Either they are too far away, the light is too low, or the grass too high, it has been frustrating because they are such outrageously beautiful birds and there are a lot of them around. Although a little soft, I guess this one is as good as I'm going to get. Really like the backlighting and BG in this one.

Very cool Bob! I'm like you always seem to surprise them in tall grass or field stubble. You're almost on top of them before they burst up, always catches me off guard so I end up missing the shot. Love the wing position and lighting on the bird. They are so beautiful. :toast:

Spectacular shot Bob ! Great details. The colors and background are gorgeous. If the bird showed a bit of his face, that would be perfect, but that would be asking too much ! :toast:

Great shot Bob, if this is the best you got, I'd say you did pretty well!

I've been trying to get a flight shot of these for several years. Like you said, there's always something that prevents it. Compared to my luck Bob, this is fantastic! Love that light coming through the wings. Beautiful shot!

Bob just a slight head turn would have been icing on the cake, really like the light showing through the wings.
