A comma butterfly in what I take to be a pose of alertness for possible danger. The signature white mark is visible on the near wing.

Fine catch on this pose, Ian. You've also got some nice colors and a complementary oof background. At first i was thinking it was the same bf as one we have in the eastern USA, but a quick check shows that they are different species (ours is Polygonia comma, yours is Polygonia c-album) but the behaviors sound very similar. The ones over here tend to be nervous and hard to approach, which makes getting a close look like this very challenging.
