Making a Smash

SET-UP: I placed the water filled pumpkin on a large stone brick to isolate, atop an old stool at four foot height. One pumpkin, one shot to try & get it right.

Clear morning light around 9:30am, with the sun directly behind me. Shaded background area for contrast.
Subject facing me, with my son to the right.
Remington 870 12 Ga using a hi velocity hp slug fired from approx. 12-15' to target.

TIMING: After everything was in line, a directed my son to lock on the target. He was close enough to hear the 10 fps burst begin, his cue to fire.

POST SCRIPT: Having never attempted this type of shot before, I had to guess as to how much shutter-speed I really needed. In hindsight, I might have edged it down a bit for more DOF.

I suppose if I tried this 50-100 times I might even catch the slug passing through.. But my wife has other plans for our remaining pumpkins:wink:

F/8, 1/8000th, ISO 640, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 @ 9:48am. Clear & sunny using spot metering.

Howard, for shame, for shame, for shame! The Great Pumpkin will know you are not only insincere, but a pumpkin murderer! Oh, the humanity!

Good catch, but don't let the GP know I said that.

Thanks, Howard. Since you didn't trigger the camera from the shot, I agree that 50 dead pumpkins would give you 50 different explosion images. Now all you have to do is establish the "Exploding Pumpkins" festival and photogs from around the world will flock to your door.

Very neat Howard and it sounds like fun too. A lot more interesting than ballistic gelatin. (smile)

Don't you need a license to hunt pumpkins?
